Ir. Adi Utomo Hatmoko, M.Arch., IAI., AA., an architect and active academic from Department of Architecture and Planning, Universitas Gadjah Mada, was invited as a guest lecturer for the Architectural Design Studio 2 course in the Master’s Program of Architecture at Petra Christian University, Surabaya. The session was held on Friday, June 20, 2025, from 16.00 to 18.30 WIB at the Main Hall Pascasarjana, Room P 03.04, 3rd Floor. His presence brought valuable insights and strengthened the students’ learning experience through a practical, real-world-based approach.
During the session, Mr. Adi served as a reviewer for student studio projects, which focused on the development of architectural design ideas. His feedback not only addressed technical aspects but also emphasized contextual, social, and sustainability values within the students’ design thinking. With more than 20 years of experience in the architectural field, Mr. Adi was able to offer relevant, real-world perspectives aligned with today’s professional challenges.
This activity reflects the university’s tangible commitment to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education. The involvement of industry professionals in academic settings contributes to a more inclusive, dynamic, and industry-relevant learning environment. This aligns with the aim of SDG 4 to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Beyond technical critique, Mr. Adi encouraged students to develop critical and reflective thinking in addressing social and environmental issues through architecture. Students were inspired to create designs that not only possess aesthetic value but also respond to community needs and contribute to the long-term goals of sustainable development. This aligns with SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, which calls for the creation of inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable urban spaces.
Through this collaboration, Universitas Gadjah Mada and Petra Christian University demonstrated their shared commitment to advancing higher education that is adaptive, transformative, and directly connected to real-world practice. This initiative not only enriches the educational experience of students but also reinforces the role of higher education institutions in shaping globally aware and socially responsible future architects.
