KKA (Kuliah Kerja Arsitektur) 2018 is excursion activity from Architecture Students. KKA 2018activity is held in the period from July to October 2018 divided into three small groups according to the focus of different countries namely Bali, Singapore, and Bangkok. The theme of this 2018 KKA is Tourism Space which has four sub-themes, namely Shopping Tourism, Tourism Culture, Eco Tourism, and Urban Tourism. The theme of Tourism Space was chosen with the consideration that the focus of the government at the present time is being intensely promoting the tourism sector, because it is known that tourism itself is the fastest growing sector. Another consideration is that Indonesia has so much tourism potential that needs to be developed with a variety of problems that need to be addressed and the most appropriate solutions are sought. Architecture in this case plays a role in the formation of space and fostered areas that can be a great marketing tool in the tourism industry.
At KKA 2018, UGM Architecture students visited various popular tourism destinations in the three countries which were considered to have real references in Indonesia’s tourism case studies. But not only visiting tourism destinations, UGM Architecture students also get material supplies from both educational institutions (universities) and architectural bureaus. These visits were accompanied by UGM Architecture lecturers, namely Prof. Ir. Wiendu Nuryanti, Prof. Ir. Atyanto Dharoko, M. Phil., Ph.D., and Dyah Titisari Widyastuti, SY., MUDD. for Bali destinations, M. Arch., Ph.D., Dimas Wihardyanto, ST. MT. for Singapore destinations, and Kurnia Widiastuti, DT., MT. for Bangkok destinations.
The universities visited in the 2018 KKA are Udayana University (Bali), National University of Singapore-Department of Architecture (Singapore), and Chulalongkorn-Faculty of Architecture (Bangkok). Direct observation of various tourist destinations in the three countries, such as Garuda Wisnu Kencana, Green School, Panglipuran Village, Garden By The Bay, Esplanade Theater, Grand Pallace, and Lumphini Park provide new space experiences that are able to educate architecture students about how design works architecture is able to encourage a tourist destination in attracting visitors or tourists to always come to enjoy the beauty and splendor.
In Bali as first destination, UGM Architecture students visit Udayana University, Jeghier Architect Bureau, Nusa Dua ITDC, and tourist destinations such as Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK), Beachwalk Shopping Center, Bajra Sandhi Monument, Werdhi Budaya Art Center, Pasar Sukowati, Green School, Agung Rai Museum Art, and Panglipuran Village.
In the second country destination, Singapore, the Marina Bays area was chosen as the first destination. In this Marina Bays area students visit the Art Science Museum and The Shopees which do have closeness and easy access. In addition, architecture students visit the Garden By The Bay, China Town, Orchard Road, Clarke Quay, and Esplanade Theathre, as well as the WOHA Architect Bureau, and DP Architect.
In the last country destination, that is Bangkok, Architecture students visit the Black Pencil and Vaslab Architect Bureau. In addition, of course, compulsory Bangkok tourism destinations such as Lumphini Park, Jim Thompson House, Grand Palace, Wat Arun, MBK (Ma Boon Khrong Center), TCDC (Thailand Creative and Design Center), Bang Sue, and BACC (Bangkok Art and Culture Center )
Field observations made by students in each focus of tourist destinations (sub-themes) will eventually be reviewed and implemented in the post-KKA design which is still a continuation of the KKA program. As a form of appreciation for the design of the final works of UGM architecture students, the work will be exhibited at the largest architectural exhibition in Yogyakarta, WEX 2019 in April.
