The Department of Architecture and Planning again held a public lecture that was open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, both those from the Urban and Regional Planning Study Program and the Architectural Engineering Study Program. The public lecture this time carries the theme “Contemporary Issues of Cities in Europe” with the speaker Prof. Ir. Bambang Hari Wibisono, MUP., M.Sc who is a lecturer from the Department of Architecture and Planning Engineering himself.

This public lecture discusses the ways of big cities in Europe who are members of the European Union in dealing with the latest urban issues, such as urban pollution, the tendency of the population to live in urban areas, and the positive and negative impacts resulting from migration to urban areas. In the Urban Agenda for the European Union, it was stated that there were 3 strategies used to deal with these urban issues, namely:

  1. Smart Growth, where urban development is based on resources and technology. Economic development is based on knowledge, research and innovation.
  2. Green Growth, where urban development is oriented towards environmental sustainability.
  3. Inclusive Growth, where the development of the city must involve all parties, without any alienated parties.

However, in implementing these strategies it is also necessary to have a commitment from the European Union to provide mutual support in improving the quality of life of its citizens, as well as efforts to increase economic competitiveness. In addition, it is also necessary to anticipate new challenges, such as population migration and socio-economic changes.

The public lecture ended with a door prize distribution from the department. There are various kinds of door prizes provided, including books, totebags, t-shirts and snacks. The door prizes are given on condition that the participants present can answer the questions given. The atmosphere was very lively because the participants scrambled to answer questions.
