Monday, August 12, 2019, the Department of Architecture and Planning UGM held an Info Day event which was an event to introduce the Department of Architecture and Planning as a whole. This Info Day was attended by all new students, both for the S1 and S2 Program in the Architecture Study Program and the S1 and S2 in the Urban and Regional Planning Study Program.

The Info Day event began with an introduction to the KM / HM of each study program at 06.30. Especially for the introduction of KM / HM, it was only followed by new undergraduate students who then continued with the Campus Tour. At 08.00 all-new S1 and S2 students, both from the Architecture Study Program and Urban and Regional Planning Study Program gathered at K1 Room to introduce further about Department of Architecture and Planning, staff and lecturers.

At 09.00, an introduction to each study program was held, both S1 and S2. For S1 Architecture Study Program, the introduction is done with the inaugural lecture in K1 Room with the speaker Mr. Ary Indra (Aboday). For the S1 Urban and Regional Planning Study Program, an introduction to the Urban and Regional Planning community was held in K1 Room with the speaker Mr. M. Sani Roychansyah. While S2 is in a different room. This inaugural lecture explained about each study program, curriculum explanation, to the supporting lecturers for each subject later.

For new undergraduate students, the event was then continued with the 2019/2020 Odd Semester KRS Filling Workshop. The purpose of this workshop is to help and guide new students so there are no mistakes in filling in KRS which is assisted by older students from each study program.

Yogyakarta as a heritage city, has been facing unprecedented development pressure to achieve sustainable development. This recent time, the approach of urban heritage conservation has been only using the method that neglects the economic sectors. Urban regeneration is one of a new approach for developing the conservation of economy and social dimensions to achieve sustainable cities.

Master Program in Urban and Regional Planning (MURP), Department of Architecture and Planning UGM in collaboration with KotaLab – City Lab in Indonesia with support from IAP, IAI Yogyakarta and The Government of Yogyakarta held the Workshop in Urban Regeneration. This workshop was designed to be a knowledge transfer process from France experiences on urban regeneration to Indonesia in the real case project, Kotabaru as the part of the heritage area in Yogyakarta. Through this workshop, experiences from France will be a benefit to Indonesian planners and architect with a real case study project

35 participants including students, urban practitioners, governments and lecturers are divided into 4 groups which work on certain area and designing proposed project based solution. The urban regeneration project design as the outcome will be presented at the public seminar in the end of the workshop.

MPWK-UGM. Graduation Period IV Academic Year of 2018/2019 followed by graduates of the MPWK study program (MPKD) as many as 15 participants will graduate as Master of Urban and Regional Planning (M.URP.)

According to the Decree of the Naming of Study Programs in the University of Gadjah Mada University 2017. The graduation procession will be held on this: Wednesday – July 24 2019 at the Grha Sabha Pramana Building.

Graduation period Period IV TA 2018/2019 which was participated by 15 graduates , with cumlaude degree as many as 6 graduates. For male participants as many as 8 and female participants as many as 7 with an average length of education of 22.86 months. Joint Studio is an annual activity that is included in elective courses in Urban and Regional Planning Study Program. Joint Studio activity is collaborating with the University of Queensland, Australia since 2015. The purpose of the Joint Studio is to make planners in the future be able to deal with and solve problems, both in the economic, social and environmental fields faced by people throughout the world. Each year the University of Queensland sends average 30 students to Indonesia and coordinated by Dr. Sonia Roitman, Associate Professor Ron Johnstone, and Dr. Karen McNamara.

This year, Joint Studio was held from July 1-14, 2019 which was attended by 18 students from Urban and Regional Planning, UGM and 22 students from the School of Earth and Environmental Science, University of Queensland. This activity was divided into 2 groups, namely the Rural Group and the Urban Group which each group was further divided into 3 small groups. The Rural group obtained the location of the survey in Gunungkidul in collaboration with the Lingkar and the Provincial Government of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, while for the Urban Group the location of the survey was in Kampung Ledhok Timoho and Kampung Gendeng in collaboration with Arkom Jogja and Kalijawi.

The first day’s activities were filled with material presentations from both parties, UGM and the University of Queensland which were then followed by group discussions. After group discussions, students who have been divided into Rural Groups and Urban Groups then went to survey locations to site visit. The third day was filled with visits to Karangwaru Riverside, Kampung Code, and Kampung Sukunan which were areas that should be used as a pilot. Site visits and group discussions were then continued in the following days interspersed with visits to several communities in Yogyakarta. On the eighth day, each group visited the local government in Yogyakarta as needed. Results from site visits, community visits, and also group discussions were then presented in Sorowajan Village which was witnessed by residents from each survey location, community, as well as collaborating parties. The series of events was then closed with a vacation together to Prambanan and Borobudur Temple.

Joint Studio activities that use the bottom-up method in the learning process are expected to be able to make students more creative and innovative in providing solutions to problems faced by the community every day. In the end, students can apply the skills they have after graduating.

Wiswakharman Expo is an annual event held by students of the UGM Architecture Study Program. The event contained an exhibition of architectural design works as a form of student excursions after visiting several places both domestic and overseas known as Kuliah Kerja Arsitektur (KKA). WEX 2019 held at Prambanan Temple presented the theme “Indonesia ‘s Rich Tourism Potential Responding Architecture” with the tagline “Ruang yang Terlewat” which is the result of KKA to Bali, Singapore, and Bangkok. The theme implies that many places in Indonesia are rich in beauty and tourism potential but are still “overlooked” by the community. The hope is that the architectural design exhibition presented can encourage people to be more explorative in exploring tourism objects in Indonesia.

WEX 2019 was held for 3 days, starting April 26 – April 28, 2019. The first event was the Opening Ceremony which was marked by the beating of the gong by Ahmad Djuhara as Chair of the Indonesian Architects Association (IAI) accompanied by Dr. Eng. Ir. Sarwadi, M. Eng as Chair of the UGM Department of Architecture and Planning. After that, the event continued with performances from Bungong, The Kandang, and several other performers. While performing, visitors were also invited to see an exhibition of architectural design works on the east side of Garuda Square, Prambanan Temple.

On the second day, there were 4 sessions. First is the Symposium Talkshow with the theme “The Mystery of Space Not Revealed”. The session began at 08.00 which was then continued with Symposium Panel Discussion at GQ Hotel. In this session, there were two panels provided by the committee, namely Panel 1 which carries the theme “River, Tourism, and People” and Panel 2 which carries the theme “Lost Space, New Face”. The session on the second day then moved to Garuda Field, Prambanan Temple in the form of an Architectural Competition Presentation and Post-KKA Presentation.

The third day was the closing of the whole series of Wiswakharman Expo 2019. On this third day, an exhibition of architectural design works was still opened. During the exhibition, visitors who came were welcome to enter through the main door provided by the committee which went directly to the location of the exhibition. At the end of the exhibition, visitors were welcomed by the appearance of guest stars on the stage. Marion Jola is one of the guest stars that became the main attraction during the closing ceremony of the Wiswakharman Expo 2019.

On Thursday (25/4), Dandhy Laksono, a WatchDoc crew shared his knowledge and experience in making documentary films that raised the issue of development.

The use of documentary films as media to raise development issues in Indonesia is now increasing. Films are chosen because tend not to be boring so that they can attract more audiences and hope that the message or issue to be raised can be more easily conveyed. Documentation of development issues through documentaries is also interesting and has various challenges ranging from the process of planning and discovery of issues to taking pictures.

WatchDoc is one of the audio-visual production houses by Dandhy Laksono and friends who tried to document the other side of development in Indonesia. One of the phenomenal works of WatchDoc, Sexy Killer, and dozens of other documentation on its journey around Indonesia through “Ekspedisi Indonesia Biru” succeeded in describing issues especially related to environmental issues, economic, and cultural wisdom.

One big task from Permasalahan Pembangunan Course that taken by 4th-semester students in the 2018/2019 academic year is making of documentary videos that can illustrate the development problems in Yogyakarta. For that, Dandhy Laksono tried to provide tips and strategies in making documentaries.

The initial stage that can be done before ‘turning on the camera’ is to look for the perspective of the issue you want to take. This is important because usually documentaries are of limited duration and within these limitations, it is very difficult to see issues from many perspectives. The perspective can be determined by questions related to the issue (5W + 1H), angle or point of view to be taken, medium or format, and platform. After that, the process of making a documentary can begin. Of course, documentary makers must be flexible and dynamic about the facts and conditions that might be found in the field. Documentaries can be done with or without initial research because the core of documentaries is an exploration of real actors and situations. Determination of the medium/format and platform for disseminating documentary works must also be tailored to the intended goals and audience. WatchDoc several times screened and screened films in order to disseminate information regarding the issues raised.

In this public lecture, discussion and question and answer run activities during the presentation. College participants not only come from S1 Urban and Regional Planning Study Program but also UGM students from other study programs.

Bali Asia International Model United Nations (BAIMUN) 2019 is a simulation of the UN conference held by the International Global Network (IGN). The recruitment process takes place online with a total of 17,899 registrants. After a selection by BAIMUN committee, there were 462 participants from 44 countries from around the world. One of the students from the Urban and Regional Planning, Ramadhani Nuresa Putri, succeeded in becoming a delegate to the event. The event was held for 4 days, from March 22 to March 25, 2019, at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua Bali, Indonesia. There are 5 series of activities, namely Opening Ceremony (Diplomatic Dinner, MUN 101, and Entertainment Session), Grand Symposium, Meeting Session, City Tour, and Closing Night which is the closing of the five series of events.

In the Opening Ceremony, the delegates were given remarks from the committee of the Bali Asia International Model United Nations 2019 about the procedures for participating MUN that held at the MUN 101 session. The next session was the Diplomatic Dinner where delegates could get to know other delegates from various countries. Children bringing mobile phones to school grand Symposium is an activity where delegates are given the opportunity to gain knowledge from the International Youth Speakers Symposium, there are H.E Mr. Aziz Nurwahyudi as Director of Public Diplomacy – Ministry of the Foreign Affairs Republic of Indonesia and Dr. Jean Couteau as Multilingual Writer – Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Denpasar.

The next day, at 08.00 WITA, the delegates arrived at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua Bali to take part in the Meeting Session activity which is the core of the Bali Asia International Model United Nations 2019. In this MUN Meeting Session, there are rules of procedures that must be done. Roll Call is a procedure that must be done every time you start a session. After that, it continued with the General Spreaker ‘s List was one of the delegates explained the topic raised in front of another delegation. Then followed by Motions that are proposed by delegates to drive the debate, such as proposing specific topics to be discussed by the council. The Session Meeting activity was ended by Draft Resolution which contained issues that had been discussed and the solution to the problems of these issues.

During the Meeting Session activities, the delegates learned to speak in public, express opinions, and also think critically in responding to the opinions of other delegates on the issues. This activity was also interspersed with entertainment to refresh the minds of the delegates which ended with the distribution of certificates and photos together.

After a full day of thinking the previous day, the delegates were then invited to take a walk around Bali, there were 3 places visited, namely Garuda Wisnu Kencana, Tanah Lot, and Ulun Danu Bratan Temple. This activity lasts until 14.00 WITA. After that, the delegates returned to the hotel to get ready to attend the end of the event, namely Closing Night. Closing Night is the most eagerly awaited activity. This is because, in Closing Night, there is an awarding session for the best delegates. In addition, delegates were also welcome to use traditional clothes from their respective countries to show cultural wealth in accordance with the theme of BAIMUN 2019, namely Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age.

The Department of Architecture and Planning at Universitas Gadjah Mada together with the Indonesian Architects Association (IAI) held an Inauguration of the Architectural Profession on February 25, 2019. Previously, on January 18, 2019, 31 students had been declared eligible to carry out the Judiciary of Professional Architect Education Students. This Architectural Inauguration Event is the first inauguration event (batch 1) conducted by PPArs (Architectural Professional Education) UGM.

PPArs is a continuation study program from Architecture S1 which was initiated by the signing of the MoU between DTAP and IAI in 2011 No.130 / HL17 / TAP / PS2011 and No.024 / MOU / IAI / III / 2011. PPArs’ vision is to produce young architects who are professional, have a high entrepreneurial spirit, and are compliant in accordance with the requirements set by IAI nationally, as well as UIA requirements internationally. PPArs is chaired by Dr. Ir. Jatmika Adi Suryabrata, M.Sc., IAI., and Ir. Adi Utomo Hatmoko, M.Arch, IAI as study program secretary.

The Inauguration Ceremony of the Architecture Profession began with singing the song Indonesia Raya and the Gadjah Mada Hymn. After that there were speeches. Dr. Eng. Ir. Sarwadi, M. Eng as Chairman of the UGM Department of Architecture and Planning who first made his speech. Then followed by a speech from Prof. Ir. Nizam M.Sc. Ph.D. as Dean of the Engineering Faculty UGM and Ahmad Djuhara as National Chairman of the Indonesian Architects Association (IAI).

Before 31 students were called forward for the inauguration of the architect’s profession, the assignments of 31 students were displayed in the form of video screenings. The invited guests present were enthusiastic when watching the video. The various student works are displayed in three-dimensional forms. After the video screening was finished, one by one the students were then called forward to the inauguration ceremony which was marked by the giving of a certificate by Prof. Ir. Nizam M.Sc. Ph.D. and Dr. Eng. Ir. Sarwadi, M. Eng.

Virginia, as one of the graduates of the Architect Professional Education who was appointed then advanced to give a speech to all invited guests. The inauguration was then closed with motivation and inspirational stories for the inauguration participants and group photos.

Tuesday, February 19, 2019, the Department of Architecture and Planning released 14 graduates from Architecture Study Program and 14 graduates from Urban and Regional Planning Study Program. The graduation ceremony began at 10:00 in the K1 Room of the Department of Architecture and Planning by singing the Indonesia Raya song and Gadjah Mada Hymn.

The program then continued with the reading of the names of graduates who invited to go forward with their parents for trophy and diploma surrender as a sign of graduation. For Architecture Study Program, the submission carried out by Dr. Eng. Ir. Ahmad Sarwadi, M. Eng. as Chairman of the Department and accompanied by Diananta Pramitasari, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D. as a representative of the Architecture Study Program. While for Urban and Regional Planning Study Program, the submission carried out by Dr. Eng. Ir. Ahmad Sarwadi, M. Eng. as Chairman of the Department and accompanied by Deva Fosterharoldas Swasto, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. as a representative of Urban and Regional Planning Study Program.

After that, the event continued with a few words from the representatives of the parents of graduates who delivered by Ir. H. Edi Rusdi Kamtono, M.M., M.T., parents of Muhammad Irfan Oktodiar (Graduation of Architecture Study Program) and also as Mayor of Pontianak. Not to forget, the graduates also said a word.

In this graduation ceremony, the highest GPA from the Architecture Study Program obtained by Annisa Nastiti with a score of 3.56 while for the Urban and Regional Planning Study Program obtained by Putu Sri Ronita Dewi with a value of 3.90. The average study period for the Architecture Study Program is 4 years 6 months and for Urban and Regional Planning Study Program, which is 4 years 4 months. The graduation ceremony was then closed with a group photo and lunch while accompanied by musical entertainment prepared in the courtyard of the Department of Architecture and Planning.

Department of Architecture and Planning in collaboration with the National Research Foundation of South Korea (NRF Korea) held a short course on the use of drones. The basis for this short course is because in general, the knowledge of how to use drones for Architecture and Planning Research  is rarely held in lectures. Usually drone course held by professional course institutions with a paid system. Thus, the Department of Architecture and Planning offers free short courses that preferred for senior undergraduate and master students (3rd, 4th and 5th+ year and MPWK) during semester holidays.

Each participant who has registered required to attend the entire course agenda held from January to February 2019. Topics raised are various, ranging from transportation, environment, green open space, housing and settlements, history, tourism, disasters, to agriculture. The short course divided into two, to wit in the class on weekdays and practice in the field at the weekend. When in class, there are invite speakers to explain different topics according to their respective expertise. Here are some invited speakers:

1. Personal Astronomy Test (GIS and Remoter Sensing Consultant-Center for International Forestry Research) is present on February 4, 2019 by presenting the topic ‘Drones for Environmental Research’
2. Irendra Radjawali (Partnership for Governance Reform-Researchers at the Institute for Oriental and Asian Studies, Bonn University, Germany) attended on February 6, 2019 by presenting topics around the use of drones in agriculture and the environment and community justice.
3. Febriyanti Suryaningsih (Executive Director of Indonesian Architectural Documentation Center) and Brahmantara (Heritage Documenting, 3d Laser Scanning and Digital Photogrametry-Borobudur Conservation Center) attended on 11 February 2019 by presenting material on the use of drones in the conservation and preservation of heritage sites.

While during the practice in the field, the course was lead by Jaehyeon (Jay) Park as the instructor assisted by Irsyad Adhi Waskita H., S.T., M.Sc. The practice uses two drones with the DJI Mavic Pro 2 model and the DJI Mavic Air Dual Combo which is a relief from NRF Korea. Although the two drones are not the highest quality models, not a few professionals use the model.
