Urban and Regional Planning Student Participated in Bali Asia International Model United Nations

Bali Asia International Model United Nations (BAIMUN) 2019 is a simulation of the UN conference held by the International Global Network (IGN). The recruitment process takes place online with a total of 17,899 registrants. After a selection by BAIMUN committee, there were 462 participants from 44 countries from around the world. One of the students from the Urban and Regional Planning, Ramadhani Nuresa Putri, succeeded in becoming a delegate to the event. The event was held for 4 days, from March 22 to March 25, 2019, at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua Bali, Indonesia. There are 5 series of activities, namely Opening Ceremony (Diplomatic Dinner, MUN 101, and Entertainment Session), Grand Symposium, Meeting Session, City Tour, and Closing Night which is the closing of the five series of events.

In the Opening Ceremony, the delegates were given remarks from the committee of the Bali Asia International Model United Nations 2019 about the procedures for participating MUN that held at the MUN 101 session. The next session was the Diplomatic Dinner where delegates could get to know other delegates from various countries. Children bringing mobile phones to school grand Symposium is an activity where delegates are given the opportunity to gain knowledge from the International Youth Speakers Symposium, there are H.E Mr. Aziz Nurwahyudi as Director of Public Diplomacy – Ministry of the Foreign Affairs Republic of Indonesia and Dr. Jean Couteau as Multilingual Writer – Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Denpasar.

The next day, at 08.00 WITA, the delegates arrived at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua Bali to take part in the Meeting Session activity which is the core of the Bali Asia International Model United Nations 2019. In this MUN Meeting Session, there are rules of procedures that must be done. Roll Call is a procedure that must be done every time you start a session. After that, it continued with the General Spreaker ‘s List was one of the delegates explained the topic raised in front of another delegation. Then followed by Motions that are proposed by delegates to drive the debate, such as proposing specific topics to be discussed by the council. The Session Meeting activity was ended by Draft Resolution which contained issues that had been discussed and the solution to the problems of these issues.

During the Meeting Session activities, the delegates learned to speak in public, express opinions, and also think critically in responding to the opinions of other delegates on the issues. This activity was also interspersed with entertainment to refresh the minds of the delegates which ended with the distribution of certificates and photos together.

After a full day of thinking the previous day, the delegates were then invited to take a walk around Bali, there were 3 places visited, namely Garuda Wisnu Kencana, Tanah Lot, and Ulun Danu Bratan Temple. This activity lasts until 14.00 WITA. After that, the delegates returned to the hotel to get ready to attend the end of the event, namely Closing Night. Closing Night is the most eagerly awaited activity. This is because, in Closing Night, there is an awarding session for the best delegates. In addition, delegates were also welcome to use traditional clothes from their respective countries to show cultural wealth in accordance with the theme of BAIMUN 2019, namely Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age.
