As the new semester approaches, the Undergraduate Architecture Program, Department of Architecture and Planning, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada, organized a Workshop on Preparation for the Even Semester of the 2024/2025 Academic Year over two days, on January 17 and 30, 2025. This workshop aimed to ensure a well-prepared semester ahead while also evaluating the activities and programs conducted in the previous semester.

During the event, faculty members discussed issues encountered in the past semester and proposed solutions to address them. In addition to faculty input, semester evaluations also incorporate feedback collected from student learning evaluation forms, which are distributed at the end of each semester. This allows lecturers to directly review student feedback and concerns and discuss appropriate follow-up actions.

The workshop also covered topics related to KAAB (Korea Architectural Accrediting Board) accreditation, particularly in light of curriculum adjustments based on the latest KAAB Conditions and Procedures. The Undergraduate Architecture Program and the Professional Architecture Education Program (PPAr) have been internationally accredited since 2020 and continuously maintain and improve the quality of architectural education at Universitas Gadjah Mada to meet global standards, in alignment with SDG 4: Quality Education.

On January 13, 2025, the Doctoral Program of Architecture, DTAP FT UGM, held a Closed Examination for Doctoral Candidate Luhur Sapto Pamungkas with the dissertation titled “Socio-Cultural Values in the Model of Sustainable Urban Kampung in Yogyakarta City.”

This research was conducted to explore the factors influencing sustainable urban kampung (KUB), which were identified based on sustainable development theories and empirical facts from previous studies. The aim was to examine these factors and discover a formula for KUB.

he Doctoral Program in Architecture, DTAP Faculty of Engineering UGM, successfully held the Kamisan Forum on Thursday, March 13, 2025. This edition of the Kamisan Forum was supported by UGM Press and featured a book discussion on Social Capital in Urban Kampung Communities from the Perspective of Javanese Culture.

The book is the work of Prof. Ir. Tarcicius Yoyok Wahyu Subroto, M.Eng., Ph.D., IPU, a professor in the Doctoral Program in Architecture. It was published by UGM Press in October 2024 and contains the results of his research on the dynamics of kampung (urban village) life.

The culmination of this research exploration reveals that kampung life is essentially governed by both manifest and latent phenomena, which shape the social and cultural uniqueness of kampung communities. Field observations uncovered various realities that indicate kampung life forms a communal entity grounded in togetherness (guyub). This sense of guyub serves as a foundational social principle, fostering harmony and solidarity as a powerful form of social capital in building a shared living environment within urban settings.

This foundational social capital underpins a collective model of living and inhabiting space, characterized by both inherent traits and distinctive qualities of kampung life. Such social capital has the strength to promote endogenous social awareness within kampung communities—something worthy of being preserved and developed in real life, especially in affirming social relationships in today’s digital era (2024). The discourse on social capital in urban kampung communities, viewed through the lens of Javanese culture, offers inspiration about the richness of social values inherent in kampung society.

The event was opened by Prof. Ir. Wiendu Nuryanti, M.Arch., Ph.D., as Head of the Study Program, followed by a presentation of the book by the author, Prof. Ir. Tarcicius Yoyok Wahyu Subroto, M.Eng., Ph.D., IPU. The discussion was then reviewed by Prof. Dr. Heddy Shri Ahimsa-Putra, M.A., M.Phil., and moderated by Gun Faisal, a doctoral student of the Architecture Program.

This event was held in hybrid format at Room K4, DTAP FT UGM and via Zoom Meeting. It was attended by UGM students as well as members of the public, including prominent figures in the fields of architecture and culture.

To inspire the students’ architectural enthusiasm, on Friday, March 21, 2025, the Undergraduate Architecture Program held a guest lecture event called Archilecture with the theme “Have Fun with Architecture Elements”in Lecture Room 1 of the Department of Architecture and Planning (DTAP), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada. The event featured two alumni from UGM’s Undergraduate Architecture Program: Russelin Edhyati (Videshiiya Studio) and Adityo Gayuh Laksono (Collabo Design Studio/CDS), and was moderated by UGM Architecture lecturer Nur Zahrotunnisaa Zagi, S.T., M.T.

Russelin Edhyati opened the lecture with a presentation titled “Material Matters: Designing with Fun Precision”.She shared how her architecture firm, Videshiiya, based in Yogyakarta, engages in a joyful design process while still prioritizing the needs of building users. Among the projects she discussed were a permaculture center and houses constructed using repurposed furniture and local resources. She and her team hold a vision of designing with an emphasis on community well-being, including the welfare of construction workers.

The lecture continued with Adityo Gayuh Laksono, who began with light-hearted remarks about the life of architecture students, reflecting on his own university experience years ago. Known by the nickname Gayuh, he started his career at a studio in Bali and in recent years founded his own architecture firm, Collabo Design Studio (CDS), in Yogyakarta. He shared numerous stories about his experiences designing hotels with cheerful and playful concepts.

Students showed great enthusiasm during the final Q&A session, asking questions about the speakers’ journeys to becoming professional architects. The event concluded with the presentation of certificates and souvenirs, followed by a group photo. Through this lecture, it is hoped that UGM Architecture students will be inspired to explore the world of architecture with enthusiasm in order to contribute to the realization of SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

Sukabumi Regency is facing a major challenge due to landslides that have hit several sub-districts in the past few weeks. This phenomenon, triggered by high rainfall, has triggered landslides and flash floods that have not only destroyed residents’ homes, but also damaged infrastructure in various areas. Hundreds of residents have been forced to evacuate to safer locations, leaving their homes that are no longer habitable. Although assistance to provide temporary housing has begun to arrive, many evacuees complain about the lack of comfort, especially when facing the scorching sun and heavy rain.

Through the KATGAMA Peduli program, the Universitas Gadjah Mada Engineering Alumni Family (KATGAMA) has taken real steps to help evacuees by building temporary housing (huntara) that is specifically designed to meet their needs. This innovative design is the work of Prof. Eugenius Pradipto, a Professor of the Department of Architecture and Planning UGM. KATGAMA Bamboo Huntara is designed not only as a place of shelter, but also to provide a sense of comfort in difficult conditions.

Measuring 6 x 6 meters, this temporary shelter adopts the concept of a stilt house with a bamboo roof designed to deal with hot weather and high rainfall. This structure has optimal ventilation to ensure good air circulation, and is equipped with storage space on the top and shelves on the walls to maximize function. This temporary shelter is designed to be used for up to one year, providing a decent and humane temporary solution for refugees.

A total of 10 temporary shelter units are planned to be built in Lembur Sawah Village, Pabuaran District, Sukabumi Regency. With a capacity to accommodate up to 40 families, this project prioritizes the use of local materials to support sustainability while empowering local residents in the construction process. Construction of the temporary shelter began on December 23, 2024 and is targeted to be completed within two months.

The KATGAMA Bamboo Temporary Housing is not only a temporary solution for refugees to survive in the midst of an emergency situation, but also a symbol of care and hope. With comfort as a priority, it is hoped that this housing will be able to provide a sense of security and comfort for affected residents while waiting for the relocation process to permanent housing. This temporary shelter is in line with the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements. By utilizing local materials, encouraging community engagement, and providing safe and decent temporary shelter, this initiative supports efforts to build resilient communities and ensure sustainable living conditions for those affected by disasters.

As a form of appreciation for the dedication of students in designing and documenting the design process, the Architecture Study Program held a Design Process Competition. This competition assesses every step of the design process, from problem analysis, solution strategies, to exploration of alternative designs that are presented creatively and clearly.

Congratulations to the students who have shown the best progress in this competition! Hopefully this award will be a motivation to continue producing innovative and quality design work.

The campus environment, especially in the Department of Architecture and Planning (DTAP), has many empty spaces that have the potential to be activated as functional areas. One of them is the DTAP innercourt, an open space that is often underutilized. With an innovative design approach, this area can be transformed into a place that supports discussion activities, collaboration, and informal interactions between students and lecturers.

The need for small spaces that are flexible, multifunctional, and easy to move is relevant in the campus environment. These modular spaces can be adapted to maximize the use of the innercourt and other empty areas in DTAP. In addition to enriching the quality of space in the campus environment, modular design also provides flexibility for use in other locations as needed.

Through this competition, students are invited to develop creative ideas that can transform DTAP’s empty spaces into more lively, productive, and inspiring areas, but remain innovative and applicable in the context of modular spaces. By focusing on the concept of modularity, participants are expected to be able to design spaces that not only meet functional needs, but also aesthetics, comfort, and mobility, which are relevant to the surrounding context.

After an intensive selection process and inspiring final presentations, we are proud to announce the winners of the PortaMod Design Competition. The competition has succeeded in creating modular design solutions that are oriented towards sustainability and innovation!

We appreciate all the finalists for the brilliant ideas they have contributed. These works prove that architecture can be the answer to global challenges, supporting efficiency, inclusivity, and sustainability. Thank you to all the participants who have contributed to inspiring future designs!

To enhance students’ understanding of architectural competitions, the Undergraduate Architecture Program, Department of Architecture and Planning (DTAP), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada, organized a guest lecture titled “Competition – Testing Creativity, Building a Portfolio” on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 08:00 to 11:00 AM WIB in Room K1 DTAP. The program invited two guest speakers with professional backgrounds: Ar. Gilang Dwi Alridho, principal architect at Inklusi Design/PT Intuisi Kolaborasi Solusi, Yogyakarta (a graduate of the UGM Undergraduate Architecture and PPAr programs), and Arif Rachman Hidayat, S.T., principal architect at Suatudio, Bandung.

The event began with an opening speech by Harry Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Head of the Undergraduate Architecture Program, followed by the moderator, Adam Joe (a 2020 undergraduate student), who introduced the speakers. Ar. Gilang Dwi Alridho then shared his journey to becoming an architect, starting from his university years, during which he actively participated in various competitions to build his portfolio. Graduating during the COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges in finding a firm to work at, leading him and his peers to establish Inklusi Design, which now operates in Yogyakarta and surrounding areas.

The session continued with Arif Rachman Hidayat, S.T., who shared his experience of founding Suatudio, an architecture firm based in Bandung, with his college friends from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Their active participation in national competitions and multiple championship titles opened doors to prestigious government projects, making Suatudio increasingly recognized by the public.

After the presentations, students enthusiastically took turns asking for tips and tricks on winning architectural competitions. This lively discussion provided an inspiring conclusion to the event, demonstrating the students’ eagerness to grow and achieve excellence. With the knowledge and motivation gained, they are expected to become more confident in honing their creativity, building portfolios, and boldly following in the footsteps of the speakers as competitive young architects.

Through the speakers’ stories of struggle and success, students were reminded that every challenge is a stepping stone toward greater achievements. This edition of Archilecture played a crucial role in igniting the spirit of young aspiring architects, encouraging them to keep innovating and moving forward in the ever-evolving world of architecture, aligning with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

As rapid urbanization continues to shape Southeast Asia, the need for sustainable water management becomes increasingly critical. Addressing this challenge, PolyUrbanWaters is a groundbreaking research and project network funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It brings together academic institutions, municipalities, government agencies, civil society, and private-sector stakeholders from Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and Germany to develop a polycentric approach to urban water management.

A Vision for Water-Sensitive Cities

The PolyUrbanWaters program focuses on creating an urban development model tailored to the specific needs and realities of fast-growing and peri-urban areas. By adopting a polycentric approach, the initiative integrates decentralized, community-driven solutions for improved water management.

Currently, the program is being implemented in three pilot cities across three countries, including Sleman, Indonesia. Since its launch in 2018, PolyUrbanWaters has collaborated with Universitas Gadjah Mada, Kota Kita Foundation, and AKSANSI to drive meaningful change.

Progress in Sleman, Indonesia

From 2018 to 2024, the program has been active in Rejodani Sub-villages, identified as ideal pilot sites within Sariharjo Village, Sleman Regency. Key research efforts include:

• 2023 Baseline Study in Sariharjo Village, which provided insights into the region’s water management challenges.
• 2024 Vision Building Study in Rejodani Sub-villages, emphasizing community-driven planning for sustainable water solutions.

The Next Steps: 2025 and Beyond

Building on past research, PolyUrbanWaters aims to expand its efforts by identifying a new sub-village in Sariharjo by January 2025—one that demonstrates both a strong willingness and capacity to engage in water-sensitive urban development.

Between March and May 2025, a formal Baseline Study will be conducted in the selected sub-village (home to approximately 2,000 residents). The results will lay the groundwork for a Vision Building Process and Transition Pathways, set to take place from August 2025 to July 2027.

With its commitment to sustainable and inclusive water management, PolyUrbanWaters is driving a transformative change in urban development across Southeast Asia. As the initiative moves forward, it holds the potential to serve as a model for cities worldwide, demonstrating how community collaboration, research, and policy integration can create a resilient urban future.
