Dr. Yani Rahmawati, S.T., M.T. appeared as a speaker at the International Conference on Architecture, Urban, and Settlement (ICARUS) 2025, organized by the Architectural Engineering Study Program of Politeknik Negeri Pontianak. The hybrid conference brought together academics, practitioners, and students from both domestic and international institutions. On Tuesday, November 12, 2025, Dr. Yani attended online as a keynote speaker, offering fresh perspectives on sustainable architectural innovations.
In her presentation, Dr. Yani delivered a talk titled “Green Meets Lean: A Decarbonisation Strategy to Do More with Less”. The presentation discussed decarbonisation strategies that combine two main concepts: green strategies and lean management. This approach is designed to help the architecture and urban development sectors achieve more while using fewer resources, aligning with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Dr. Yani highlighted the differences in strategy implementation between Western and Eastern contexts. In the West (Europe and the United States), regulations focus on achieving net-zero targets and retrofitting existing buildings, supported by incentives such as subsidies and tax credits. Implementation in this region is generally driven by market mechanisms. In contrast, in the East (Asia), rapid new construction requires policies emphasizing new building standards and the use of Green Bonds as financial tools.
She also explained the principles of Lean Management, emphasizing the importance of identifying and eliminating the “7 Wastes” that do not add value: overprocessing, defects, overproduction, inventory, transportation, waiting, and motion. In addition, the implementation of the Just In Time (JIT) inventory system can optimize supply chains, improve efficiency, and reduce both energy consumption and carbon emissions.
To enhance audience understanding, Dr. Yani concluded her session with several case studies. These examples illustrated how the Green Meets Lean concept can be applied in real-world scenarios. As a result, participants not only gained theoretical knowledge but also practical examples relevant to sustainable development. By sharing these insights, the session also contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education), ensuring participants acquire the skills and knowledge needed to innovate and make informed decisions in the fields of architecture and urban planning.
