A guest lecture organized by the Master’s Program in Architecture was held on May 5, 2025, featuring Prof. Dr. Mark Hampton (Emeritus Associate Professor, University of Kent, UK) as the speaker. He delivered a lecture titled “Planning Island Tourism in Indonesia: Opportunities and Challenges.” The session was attended in person by all students from the 2024 cohort and was also accessible to the public through an online platform. Diananta Pramitasari, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., as the Head of the Architecture Program, accompanied the event and served as moderator.
In his lecture, Prof. Hampton discussed the development of island tourism, which has significantly grown in various locations, including Gili Trawangan and Bali. He emphasized that such growth brings about challenges that require careful study and wise response. Prof. Hampton presented his research activities and findings related to island tourism in Gili Trawangan, including his multiple site visits and field observations. He also elaborated on the research methods used—such as site mapping, interviews with local communities, and other relevant data collection processes. The lecture highlighted a number of critical insights that contribute to a deeper understanding of island tourism, along with several recommendations based on his research. According to Prof. Hampton, “Effective planning and implementation are key to manage island tourism sustainably.” The implementation of this activity aligns with the achievement of SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
