The Architecture Program of Universitas Gadjah Mada held a Matereality Lecture on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Lecture Room 1 (K1). The session, which took place from 08:30 to 11:00 WIB, featured Daikin Air Conditioning as the guest speaker, presenting a special topic on ventilation systems in hotel buildings.

The lecture opened with remarks from Ms. Nur Zahrotunnisaa Zagi, who explained the course contract for Matereality as well as the point-based system, which serves as a prerequisite for enrolling in the Materiality in Architecture course. The event was attended by undergraduate architecture students and was mandatory for students of the Comprehensive Technology Studio, as the hotel design theme directly aligned with the studio project for the semester.

Before the main session, Daikin introduced the Daikin Designer Award (DDA) 2025, a design competition in collaboration between Daikin Indonesia and Malaysia. The award features two major categories—professional and student—with subcategories for built works and conceptual projects, focusing on residential buildings and commercial F&B. This year’s theme, “Originality”, challenges participants to create ideal living spaces that highlight originality in the era of artificial intelligence.

In the main session, Daikin presented material on Hotel, Villa, and Resort Applications, covering critical aspects such as corrosion challenges in AC units for coastal buildings, implementation of room control systems for energy efficiency, and centralized control systems for managing AC units in hotels and resorts. Specific AC applications for guest rooms, suites, ballrooms, lobbies, and restaurants were also introduced, complete with anti-corrosion technologies and environmentally friendly innovations.

The lecture concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where students had the opportunity to explore more deeply the application of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems in architectural design, technical challenges in the field, and future prospects of ventilation innovations in building design.

Beyond broadening students’ technical knowledge, the event also aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, through energy-efficient AC technologies,

  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by promoting comfortable and environmentally conscious hotel design,

  • SDG 13: Climate Action, through emission reduction and the minimization of excessive energy use.

Thus, this Matereality Lecture is expected not only to strengthen the technical understanding of UGM Architecture students but also to bridge academic knowledge with industry practice and global sustainability agendas.
