The new cohort of the Master of Urban Design Program (Batch 9) conducted the Matriculation Program for Urban Design Studio Preparation from February 2–6, 2026. This activity marked an initial stage in entering the academic process for the even semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The Salatiga City Center area was selected as the study object for the Urban Design Studio, providing students with the opportunity to directly observe the dynamics of an urban area with its unique characteristics, potentials, and challenges within the context of urban design.
This matriculation program was intended to provide a foundational understanding of the scope of urban design through direct exploration of urban areas. Through field observations, discussions, and preliminary analyses, students were introduced to various aspects shaping urban spaces, including physical, social, and environmental elements. In addition, the activity aimed to align students’ perspectives and prepare their basic competencies to better engage in the overall academic process, particularly in studio-based learning as the core of the Master of Urban Design Program.
This activity also contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 and Sustainable Development Goal 11. By promoting experiential, field-based learning, the program supports the provision of inclusive and quality education while fostering an understanding of sustainable urban planning and design. This approach strengthens students’ capacity to respond to urban challenges and contributes to the development of more livable, resilient, and sustainable cities.
