The Community Service Team – Building Technology Research Group, Architecture Study Program of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta, in collaboration with the Gedongkiwo Tourism Awareness Group (Kelompok Sadar Wisata/Pokdarwis), conducted a Tourism Planning Program for Gedongkiwo Urban Village, Mantrijeron District, Yogyakarta City in 2025. This activity aimed to encourage the development of community- and culture-based urban tourism through a sustainable spatial planning and architectural approach.
The program activities included mapping local tourism potential, observing the residential environment, holding discussions with local residents and related institutions, and formulating a concept for area-based tourism development. The planning process involved Pokdarwis members, local MSME actors, community leaders, and students from the UGM Architecture Study Program. This collaboration created a platform for dialogue between the community and academics in defining tourism development directions that align with local characteristics and needs.
Gedongkiwo Urban Village possesses diverse tourism potentials, ranging from neighborhoods with historical and cultural values, creative economic activities, to its proximity to major tourist destinations in Yogyakarta City. Through this planning initiative, these potentials were directed toward integrated development by considering spatial quality, environmental preservation, and the strengthening of neighborhood identity as a tourism attraction.
Through the collaboration between Pokdarwis Gedongkiwo and the UGM Architecture Study Program in 2025, the initiative is expected to result in participatory and sustainable tourism planning, while also enhancing community capacity to independently manage and develop local tourism destinations. The outcomes of this activity are expected to serve as an initial foundation for the development of inclusive and competitive tourism in Gedongkiwo Urban Village in the future. This activity contributes primarily to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and supports SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through participatory and sustainable community-based urban tourism planning.
