Final Presentation of Basic Urban Design Exploration Studio – Class of 2024

On Thursday, June 12, 2025, students of the 2024 Master of Urban Design Program, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Even Semester), held the Final Presentation of the Basic Urban Design Exploration Studio. The event featured an external reviewer from the Yogyakarta City Office of Land and Spatial Planning, Mr. Pamungkas, S.T., M.T., along with his team.

The Basic Exploration Studio is part of the learning process that emphasizes initial explorations of urban issues in depth. This semester, under the guidance of Dr. Eng. Ir. Muhammad Sani Roychansyah, S.T., M.Eng. and Dr. Dyah Titisari Widyastuti, S.T., MUDD, the project theme was “West Jogja Rapid Growth Area”, with a specific focus on the area surrounding HOS Cokroaminoto Street, Yogyakarta. The students conducted spatial, social, and environmental analyses as the foundation for developing sustainable area development strategies. read more

Dr. Yori Herwangi Shares Insights on Quantitative Research to Support Sustainable Policy

July 23, 2025 – Dr. Yori Herwangi, S.T., M.URP., served as a guest speaker in a training session organized by the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, a research organization known for its approach of “Count It, Change It, and Scale It” in driving impact through data-based research. The training was held online via Zoom from 10.00 to 12.00 WIB.

In this session, Dr. Yori presented a topic titled Basic Applied Quantitative Research: Data Collection and Analysis. She began by introducing the fundamentals of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method research, explaining their characteristics and types. She then delved into quantitative analysis methods, covering descriptive and inferential statistics. The presentation also included explanations of univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistics, supported by real-world examples to help participants better grasp the concepts. read more

The 2nd International Field School on The Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta and Its Historic Landmarks: Conservation and Management of The Buffer Zones

How do we care for a living world heritage site? Not merely by admiring it, but by deeply understanding it, this is exactly what the participants of this program aimed to do.

Yogyakarta, a city rich in cultural heritage, once again captured international attention. The city’s Cosmological Axis and its surrounding historic landmarks are key elements recognized by UNESCO. In an effort to strengthen conservation efforts and deepen understanding of this heritage, the UGM-UNESCO Chair in Heritage Cities Conservation and Management, in collaboration with the Yogyakarta Municipality Government, Kanki Laboratory, and the Jogja Heritage Society, held the 2nd International Field School on the Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta and Its Historic Landmarks: Conservation and Management of the Buffer Zones. The five-day field school, held from 14 to 18 July 2025, took place in multiple key locations: the Department of Architecture and Planning, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada; Yogyakarta Municipality Office; four subdistricts (Kadipaten, Patehan, Panembahan, and Ngupasan) within the buffer zone; and various points along the Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta. read more

Bali International Hospital Design by Ir. Adi Utomo Hatmoko Wins IndoBuildTech 2025 Award

Architect and professional practitioner Ir. Adi Utomo Hatmoko, M.Arch., who also serves as a lecturer at the Architecture and Planning Department, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), has once again achieved national recognition. His design for the Bali International Hospital received the highest recognition for architectural masterpieces in the Hospital and Healthcare category from IndoBuildTech on July 4, 2025. This award highlights the excellence of the design concept, the precision in planning, and the contribution of architecture to sustainability and quality of life. read more

Transforming Healthcare Architecture Knowledge with Pak Adi at AAPDC 2025

Adi Utomo Hatmoko, M.Arch., an Architecture lecturer at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), had the honor of serving as one of the key speakers in the Architectural Advanced Professional Development Course (AAPDC), an advanced architectural competency development initiative organized by Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia (IAI). This program represents a collaborative effort between the IAI National Board and Provincial Chapters and serves as an annual forum for enhancing the professional capabilities of architects through specialized and context-relevant content. Yogyakarta, May 27, 2025 – The Undergraduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning at Universitas Gadjah Mada held another guest lecture on May 27, 2025, with the topic “Learning from Co-Designing Public Space for Environmental and Social Benefit.” The lecture was delivered in a hybrid format and was open to the general public.

This session featured Fildzah Husna Amalina, S.PWK., M.Sc., a Knowledge and Learning Specialist at Kota Kita Foundation, as the speaker.

The speaker emphasized the vital role of community influence in shaping cities, particularly through community-based organizations. Kota Kita Foundation is one such example. read more

China Center for Urban Development (CCUD) Visits UGM’s MURP UGM to Explore Smart City Collaboration

Yogyakarta, May 24, 2025 — The Master Program in Urban and Regional Planning (MURP), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), welcomed a delegation from the China Center for Urban Development (CCUD) to explore potential collaboration in the field of smart and sustainable city development.

The delegation, led by Mr. Liu Qiang, Deputy Director General of CCUD, and Ms. Zhao Fanfan, Director of the Digital Economy Office within the Smart and Low-Carbon Development Division, was received by Dr. Eng. Muhammad Sani Roychansyah, S.T., M.Eng., and Dr. Ir. Tri Mulyani Sunarharum, S.T., Head and Secretary of the MURP Program. The meeting served as a platform to exchange insights and identify opportunities for future cooperation in areas of urban innovation, planning, and policy. read more

The lecture featured Agustin Wijayanti, S.Si., M.Ec.Dev., Head of the Planning Division of the Yogyakarta City Development Planning Agency (Bappeda). The session was moderated by Dr. Eng. Ir. Muhammad Sani Roychansyah, S.T., M.Eng., lecturer of the Urban Economics course. The event was attended by students from both the undergraduate and master’s programs of Urban Economics, and was also open to the public. read more

UGM Architecture Student Won Young Artist Prize Sakura Pigma Art Contest 2025

Yogyakarta, May 12, 2025 – Another remarkable achievement has been made by a Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) student on the international stage. A UGM architecture student has won an award in the Young Artist Prize Sakura Pigma Art Contest 2025, a global art competition held online. With the theme “Joy in My Studies,” the artwork reflects a personal journey toward higher education at UGM, presented in a captivating artistic style.

Using KOI Sakura watercolor and Micron Sakura pens, the artwork depicts a woman carrying an architect’s tube accompanied by a wooden dragon heading toward UGM’s campus. The background, portraying the road to UGM, is illustrated from a bird’s-eye perspective, creating a profound narrative and visual impact. This artwork not only showcases technical expertise in visual arts but also conveys themes of optimism and enthusiasm for pursuing education. read more

The guest lecture featured Hari Kusdaryanto, Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) of Citiasia Inc., who thoroughly discussed the opportunities and challenges surrounding the implementation of smart city concepts both now and in the future.
