A fire engulfed the settlement of Sade Village, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday night, August 22, 2026. The fire broke out while local residents were resting and resulted in hundreds of traditional Sasak houses being burned. Not only buildings and homes were affected, but residents’ belongings, including traditional woven textiles that constitute one of Sade Village’s distinctive local commodities, were also lost in the incident.

Sade Village is one of Indonesia’s traditional villages known as a destination for both domestic and international tourists. The village preserves the rich traditional architecture of the Sasak people, as well as tangible and intangible cultural heritage that continues to be maintained and preserved by the local community. Therefore, the fire not only caused material losses for residents but also posed a threat to the continuity of the cultural heritage and traditional architectural character that define Sade Village. read more

Deva Fosterharoldas Swasto, a lecturer at the Department of Architecture and Planning (DTAP), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), was one of the speakers at a discussion on alternative vertical housing models for residential areas in Yogyakarta City, organized by the Yogyakarta City Government, through the Housing and Settlement Areas Working Group (Pokja PKP).

The discussion addressed the need to develop alternative vertical housing models amid limited land availability and growing housing demand in Yogyakarta City. As a center for education, government, tourism, and economic activities, Yogyakarta has relatively high population density. Meanwhile, data on housing occupancy backlog indicate that 29.72% of households in Yogyakarta City do not yet occupy their own homes, making housing provision an important issue in the city’s development. read more

Prof. Wiendu Nuryanti delivered a Valedictory Lecture titled “Rekayasa Arsitektur, Budaya, dan Pariwisata” (Engineering Architecture, Culture, and Tourism) on Tuesday (28/7), marking her retirement as a professor. On the same occasion, Prof. Wiendu also launched her book, Borobudur dan Kita. The event was attended by Prof. Wiendu’s colleagues, friends, and family, who gathered to hear the ideas she shared in her farewell lecture.

In her lecture, Prof. Wiendu highlighted the importance of the concept of “rekayasa” within the trilogy of architecture, culture, and tourism as one of the foundations for Indonesia to develop into a global superpower. According to her, the word reka is rooted in the idea of the work of human intellect and wisdom. Within this trilogy, architecture serves as the space or vessel; culture provides meaning, narratives, and legitimacy; while tourism serves as its driving force. read more

From July 6 to 8, 2026, representatives of the Department of Architecture and Planning, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), conducted an academic visit to the Department of Architecture, Dong-Eui University (DEU), Busan, South Korea. This visit marked an important milestone in strengthening UGM Architecture’s international network, while also introducing the context of architectural education in Indonesia to the academic community in South Korea.

The series of activities began with a guest lecture titled “Learning Architecture in Context: Indonesia and Yogyakarta.” This lecture introduced Indonesia, the city of Yogyakarta, and the profile of UGM’s Architecture Study Program to DEU’s academic community. It also presented an overview of ongoing research focused on publicness in architecture and urban design, a topic exploring how public space is shaped and given meaning within architectural practice and urban design. The lecture was attended by approximately 30 final-year students and 4 professors from DEU, becoming a space for academic dialogue between two institutions from different cultural backgrounds. read more

Bakti Setiawan, M.A., Ph.D., affectionately known as Prof. Bobby, Professor of the Urban and Regional Planning Study Program, Department of Architecture and Planning, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (DTAP FT UGM), participated in The 6th World Planning Schools Congress (WPSC) 2026, held from June 29 to July 3, 2026, in Helsinki, Finland. Under the theme “Peripheral Visions: Rethinking Planning”, the congress brought together academics, researchers, and planning practitioners from around the world to discuss emerging challenges and new directions in planning theory and practice in response to today’s global issues. read more

Prof. Ir. Ikaputra, M.Eng., Ph.D., a lecturer at the Department of Architecture and Planning (DTAP), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), was officially inaugurated as a Professor of Universitas Gadjah Mada on Thursday (June 4) at the UGM Senate Hall. During the inauguration ceremony, Prof. Ikaputra received the Professor’s ceremonial sash from the Chair of the UGM Board of Professors, accompanied by the Chair of the UGM Academic Senate and the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs of the Faculty of Engineering. read more

The Doctoral Program in Architecture, Department of Architectural Engineering and Planning (DTAP), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), conducted two Doctoral Candidate Closed Examinations in April and May 2026. These academic activities represent an important stage in the doctoral research process, highlighting architectural studies that contribute to a deeper understanding of urban issues through scientific approaches.

The first closed examination was held on April 6, 2026, for Doctoral Candidate Husna Izzati with the dissertation title “Kontinuitas Identitas Lanskap Pusat Kota Lama Bandung” (Continuity of Landscape Identity in the Old City Center of Bandung). This research explores how the identity of Bandung’s Old City Center landscape was formed, transformed, and maintained throughout the city’s development. Through a qualitative case study approach and historical-morphological analysis, the research reveals that the continuity of landscape identity is not only shaped by physical elements but also by the persistence of functions and symbolic meanings embedded within the urban space. read more

Bakti Setiawan, M.A., Ph.D., a faculty member of the Department of Architecture and Planning, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), served as a keynote speaker in a dissemination event on Spatial Planning Documents covering the Yogyakarta Special Region Spatial Plan (RTRW) 2023–2043 and the Development Strategy for the Sultanate and Duchy Strategic Spatial Units (Satuan Ruang Strategis/SRS) 2023–2043. A lecturer from the Department of Architecture and Planning Engineering (DTAP), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Ir. Ar. Adi Utomo Hatmoko, M.Arch., IAI., AA., served as one of the speakers at the International Collaborative Studio (ICS) 5.0 in 2026. This international program was a collaboration between the Architecture Study Program of Universitas Brawijaya, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), and The University of Western Australia (UWA).

On this occasion, Adi Utomo Hatmoko delivered a presentation entitled “Designing a Student Hub,” which discussed the importance of designing communal student spaces as an integral part of the campus environment. The presentation highlighted how a student hub functions not only as an academic support facility, but also as a space for collaboration, social interaction, creativity, and student community development. read more

The Department of Architecture and Planning Engineering (DTAP), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada once again held a Graduation Farewell Ceremony for students of the Undergraduate Architecture Study Program and the Undergraduate Urban and Regional Planning (URP) Study Program for the May 2026 period. The event served as an appreciation of the students’ academic achievements as they completed their studies and prepared to pursue their professional and academic journeys.

In this period, the Undergraduate Architecture Study Program graduated 4 students who had completed their yudisium process on January 30, 2026, and April 20, 2026. All graduates received the distinction of Sangat Memuaskan (Highly Satisfactory) with an average GPA of 3.27. The highest GPA was achieved by Kurnia Faliandra Wijaya with a GPA of 3.40. Meanwhile, the shortest study period was completed by Nuha Mehrunisa in 4 years and 8 months, while the youngest graduate was Shanata Alfika Nugrahani at the age of 22 years and 7 months. read more
