Understanding urban spatial structures is fundamental for guiding equitable and sustainable urban development, particularly in cities undergoing rapid transformation in the Global South. Conventional approaches often depend on fixed administrative boundaries or outdated planning models, which inadequately reflect the fluid and evolving nature of urban spatial dynamics. These traditional frameworks tend to overlook the complex interactions and functional linkages that shape urban form and activity patterns, thereby limiting the effectiveness of urban planning and policy interventions. To address this gap, our study introduces an integrated geospatial methodology that combines diverse spatial datasets and advanced analytical techniques to delineate urban centers and sub-centers more accurately. By applying this approach to Magelang city and region in Central Java, Indonesia, the research highlights how combining multiple scales of spatial data—such as land use, transportation networks, and socio-economic indicators—can reveal nuanced spatial structures that traditional methods miss. This multi-scale analysis not only enhances the understanding of urban spatial functions but also provides a robust framework for planners and policymakers to identify emergent urban patterns and support more adaptive, context-sensitive urban development strategies.
On Friday, 26 September 2025, the Architecture Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) successfully held an event entitled “MateREALity: AutoConz 3D Construction Printing” as part of the MateREALity 2025/2026 series. The activity was shared via Instagram and featured on the official @architecture.ugm account.
The session focused on the introduction and exploration of 3D construction printing technology as an innovation in the construction industry. The event was organized in collaboration with DEKKSON, which introduced AutoConz technology as one of the breakthroughs in future construction methods.
Yogyakarta, 31 October 2025 – The Undergraduate Program of Urban and Regional Planning (PWK), Universitas Gadjah Mada, once again held a guest lecture entitled “Towards Sustainable Industrial Areas: Concepts, Governance, and Development Strategies of the Batang Integrated Industrial Estate (KIT Batang).” The lecture was conducted offline and was open to the public at the DTAP Building, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Beyond a conventional guest lecture, the event was also conducted in collaboration with the Student Association of Urban and Regional Planning Engineering (HMTPWK) UGM as part of the Company Visit x Industrial Estate Planning Course.
Yogyakarta, 24 October 2025 – The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (PWK), Universitas Gadjah Mada, once again hosted an online guest lecture featuring Jelle Thery, MLA, a Landscape Architect and Founder of Urban Nature. The lecture was entitled “Integrated Water Resilience, Designing for Biodiversity, and Creating Happy Places for People (Forming Accessible Places Where Nature and People Find a Balance).”
In this lecture, Jelle Thery discussed landscape architecture concepts centered on a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. The main issue highlighted was the importance of Regenerative Design, an approach that focuses not only on sustainability but also on the restoration of natural ecosystems. This approach integrates urban water management (water resilience), the enhancement of biodiversity, and the creation of healthy and enjoyable public spaces (happy places). In this context, Jelle emphasized that nature should be understood as a system intrinsically connected to humans, rather than merely a backdrop, and that design must foster a symbiotic relationship between the two.
Yogyakarta, 28 October 2025 – In this edition, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (PWK), Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a guest lecture entitled “Property Market Research.” The lecture was conducted offline at the Department of Architecture and Planning Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada. The event featured Nurul Soraya Desi Yonasari, Senior Researcher at Colliers Indonesia, as the guest speaker.

In this guest lecture, Nurul Soraya delivered a comprehensive discussion on property market research, with a particular focus on the hospitality sector. The session began with a fundamental understanding of hotels, covering classifications based on star ratings and travel purposes, as well as an introduction to hotel chains and branding concepts.
Yogyakarta, 25 September 2025 – The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (PWK), Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a guest lecture entitled “Systems Approach to Planning” conducted offline at the Building of the Department of Architecture and Planning Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada. The lecture was open to members of the academic community as well as the general public.
On this occasion, PWK UGM invited Nicholas Phelps, Associate Dean (International) and Chair of Urban Planning, Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning (ABP), The University of Melbourne, as the keynote speaker.

Material is an essential element that cannot be separated from architectural design. To deepen their understanding of materials, undergraduate students of the Architecture Study Program, Department of Architecture and Planning (DTAP), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada regularly attend the MateREALity or Architectural Materiality class, which features guest speakers from architectural practices and building material industries. As a continuation of this program, 30 selected students joined the MateREALity Tripto Solo and Semarang on October 17–19, 2025.
In the previous Professional Studio II, PPAr students of academic year 2024/2025 have finished their studio projects and submitted their works for C40: Reinventing Cities (Students) international competition. The design process, enriched by direct guidance and several reviews by external architects have resulted in an achievement worth to be celebrated. The PPAr students have managed to gain the title of both second champion and third champion at C40: Reinventing Cities under the category of Marconi District Student Housing.
